A Letter of Wishes sits alongside a Will or trust and can give your executors or trustees additional context about your preferences, family circumstances and the way you would like discretionary decisions to be approached.
What it is
We describe it as a non-binding letter giving family, executors and trustees guidance about how you would like your wishes carried out.
What it can cover
It can be used for practical and personal guidance that does not belong in the binding Will itself—for example, preferences about personal possessions, funeral arrangements, family circumstances or guidance for trustees where they have discretion.
What it cannot do
A Letter of Wishes does not replace or amend the Will. If you want something to be legally binding—such as changing who inherits—that needs to be dealt with in the Will or another appropriate legal document.
